vinyls

Back from Vancouver, I have a new drive to use my parents' old turntable. It's a Technics SL-Q200, but the needle is broken (I was trying to be a mix master back in the day with my Charlie Brown vinyl). With a new cartridge coming from eBay and 10 new (new to me) records for $10 to screw around with, I can't wait to get this party going. Updates to come.

published

I just got my pictures published for the first time in the latest issure of The Gateway. Go pick yourself up a copy (or two, or three)! My third assignment get's me published, I'm not ashamed of that. I know it's just a small university paper, but I still feel like my work can be appreciated now. I'm not going to be the only one who sees the pictures! Here's a picture of the paper:

The badminton (top left) and volleyball (huge main one) pictures are taken by me. Check out my other pictures here.

walkout

Last night I had a walkout. I don't remember if I've ever had a walkout, but I will remember this one for a bit. I have nothing against any racial group, but certain things I see at work just perpetuate racial stereotypes. Let us investigate a certain situation that would drive the most noble person crazy.

It's about 10 o'clock (an hour from close) and 4 guys of a certain racial group came in and asked if they could sit in the patio. Hmmmm, that's odd, but whatever. The guest can sit anywhere they want, they have the power. I go out there and two of the four guys break out a sick accent of their native country and try to pretend that they are here on vacation. The other two guys are laughing. I'm thinking how long can these guys keep it up. They say shit like they've never had beef before and ask me if the liquor has free refills (they don't drink beer, just "hard liquor"). The one whose name was "Jesse" (heavily accented) whips out a cell phone and asks one of the friends if they have these phones in Canada. It was a damn Samsung (no Bluetooth? gh3y) and I was thinking in my head that I should show him my phone. They are definitely rude and I'm trying to keep my composure while I serve these jackasses. They leave the table a couple times before their food gets there because they are waiting for some friends out front. Mary, another server, says she recognizes one of the "visitors" and he used to spray their mail with supersoakers. He is the "Jesse" guy. Anyways, a guy and a girl join them and the girl goes up to the bar to get her own drinks. She said she didn't want the guys to pay for her drinks because she didn't know them very well. Looking back, I think she didn't want to burn in hell for walking out. She is still guilty in my mind because she knew what these fuckers were doing. They eat their four burgers and say that beef tastes good. I'm just trying to keep it together. The "Jesse" guy then tells me that Mary thinks she knows him, but she must be mistaken because he now says his name is "Gur------." Remember, he just told me his name was "Jesse" 15 minutes ago. Whatever. Mind you I still have tables in my section, so I can't see the patio all the time. The staff was eating in the bottom greenhouse, so they were keeping the fuckers honest. I go out and there is one guy sitting there, I'm trying to think where the other guys are. Going for a smoke? Waiting for more friends? Maybe I was being a little naive in thinking that nobody would walk out, but the next time I went to check it out, the table was empty. Nothing but empty baskets and drinks. Wow, I didn't know what to think. A $62 table just left without paying. Now who really walks out? It's not "cool" or "rebellious" in any way in my mind. It's stealing, particularly from your server. It's morally wrong to treat another human being with such disrespect. Really, who does that? I really hope I see these asses again, or I could just ask Mary where "Jesse" lives and egg his house.

ADDITION:
Continuing with the stereotypes, today, I had a table of about 18 people of the previously said ethnicity. I got a $13 tip for a $220 bill. Please! As much as it sucks to hear it, there lays some truth behind these stereotypes. Do your part to stop them!
